Oral medicine describes multiple pathologies or disorders of the oral environment. Common conditions managed are;

-
recurrent oral ulceration
-
chronic oral ulceration
-
oral lichen planus
-
vesiculobullous disorders
-
polyps
-
mucocoele (blocked minor salivary glands)
-
dry mouth
-
burning mouth/tongue syndrome
-
oral cancer and pre-cancerous lesions
-
red and white patches (erythroplakia and leukoplakia)

There are a multiple other odd conditions that either affect the oral environment directly or are oral manifestations of an underlying disorder. Many of these are simple clinical diagnoses but some will require a biopsy and/or further treatment.

"oral lichen planus is common and often requires a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Malignant transformation is only seen in a few types and these require monitoring"
